Caring for Substance

Exposed Children

This class will be broken into two sections, ages 0-2 and ages 2+.

Ages 0-2 curriculum will focus heavily on withdrawal management and milestone monitoring. This section will include discussion on Eat Sleep Console (ESC) - a non-pharmacological method of monitoring infants experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS).

Following completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify symptoms of polysubstance withdrawal in infants.

  • Discuss comfort measures caretakers can utilize to soothe infants experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

  • Describe indications that medical evaluation may be warranted to assess need for pharmacologic intervention.

  • Discuss developmental milestones for children up to age 2 and identify ways polysubstance exposure may affect these.

Ages 2+ curriculum will have continued focus on developmental milestones and strategies to help identify and mitigate complications of substance exposure. This will include content on psychological and physiological complications that may arise as the child undergoes puberty. We will also discuss strategies for talking to children about substance use and their potential predisposition for substance use disorders and other mental health conditions.
